Thesis

Due to the preference of modern practices, the tradition of arts and crafts making of the ethnolingustic groups of SOCCKSARGEN is slowly diminishing. For this reason, it is vital to document the arts and crafts making along with the vernacular architecture of the ethnolinguistic groups of SOCCKSARGEN in order to preserve their culture and tradition.
The making of the arts and crafts of the ethnolinguistic groups in SOCCKSARGEN were documented including the spaces involved and their vernacular structures. The customs and tradition in arts and crafts making were also considered since they govern the actions of the craftsmen and weavers in the spaces. The data gathering involved key informant interviews and photo and video documentation.
It was found that Kawayan or Bamboo is the main material for the vernacular structures where the arts and crafts are made. Nipa is also used for roofing and Softwoods are used for columns and floor joists. These materials are present in the surroundings or can be sourced in the municipality. Open plans are prevalent in the vernacular structures and the spaces are dictated by the activities done in them. In some groups, there are customs that must be followed in arts and crafts making, however some do not follow such. The most important thing is that the place should be solemn and quiet while making the arts and crafts. The data gathered were made as basis for the architectural design guidelines of the cultural complex in SOCKKSARGEN. The project aims to preserve the culture and traditions of the ethnolinguistic groups of SOCCKSARGEN and at the same time showcase them to the general public.
