Screening of bioactive agents in Moringa Oleifera Lam. seeds using brine shrimp lethality and selected bacteria / Patty S. Buencosa - 2001 - 27 leaves

Thesis (BS Biology) -- University of the Philippines Mindanao, 2001

A crude extract from the seeds of Moringa oleifera Lam locally known as malunggay was obtained using chloroform as solvent and twice purified using benzene. The final crude extract was obtained from the benzene layer after evaporation at room temperature. Cytotoxicity test using brine shrimp lethality was done with the extract diluted to the following concentrations: 1 ppt, 10 ppt and 100 ppt. this was done in duplicate. The median lethal concentration was determined using the Probit Analysis. The 24hr LC50 value of the sample and benzene were 4.734 l/ml and 11.01 l/ml, respectively. The same concentrations of the crude extract were tested for antimicrobial activity against Eschirichia coli (Castellani and Chalmers, 1919), Staphylococcus aureus ( Rosenbach, 1884), Bacillus subtilis (Cohn, 1872) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ( Schroeter, 1872). Little or no activity against the selected bacteria was observed
