Thesis (BS Biology) -- University of the Philippines Mindanao, 2001

Surface and subsurface water samples were obtained from Nabok River in Mt. Diwalwal, Davao del Norte. The samples were screened for mercury-resistant microorganism by spread plating on MS agar medium containing 10oom HgCl2. Six microbial isolates from surface water and two microbial isolates from subsurface were obtained. The surface isolates were able to tolerate up to 30 ppm HgCl2. The resistance of these organisms to high levels of mercury allows them to be considered as candidates for the biological treatment of mercury contaminated water. Morphological and some physiological tests indicated that these colonies might belong to the genus bacillus, pseudomonas and yeast. It is recommended that further tests be done to identify the isolates at the species level
