Summary, etc. | This research was conducted to determine how the grapevine circulates and occurs within the e-group of UP Sigma Beta Sorority of UP Mindanao. Furthermore, it also aimed to know the reasons affecting the occurrence of the grapevine as well as to identify the typed of grapevine which manifested in the arena of communication such as the e-group. It focused of the richest topic that was posted in the organization?s e-group which is about the forthcoming caravan of the Diliman elder sisters. The data were analyzed by gathering all the topics related to the caravan. These data included all the information circulating in the website and the exact statements the members posted on the page. There was also a background check regarding the members? number of years in service and a short description on the members who contributed to the grapevine based on the data gathered from the e-messages. Results of the research have shown that there are several factors affecting the flow of grapevine in an organization. Major factors that determined a participant?s contribution to the flow of the grapevine is her time availability and her access to technology. One reasons for members? active participation that they find in the grapevine chances to fill in the gaps in social conversations, and to avoid suspense over suspected events. Moreover, the UPSB e-group served as an effective informal network where members of the organization can share information. The profiling proved that a members? active participation in the organization may be determined by her position in the organization. Informal networks are most likely to develop among people who share the same interests. Results of the research revealed that the cluster chain was the most prevalent in all the network maps that were presented. With all the findings of this research, the researcher recommends that UPSB continue utilizing the e-group as a channel for the grapevine. Using two or three other media as informal networks along the e-group will facilitate communication better among resident and non-resident members. But in using other informal networks, members must share information in one medium in reference to the information they shared in other media. |
