Summary, etc. |
Music and architecture have been associated to each other for many years. Many great designers and planners of the past have looked into the parallel connections of the two. Pythagoras, a Greek philosopher, studied about the ratios of musical intervals and its connection to the harmony of nature. Plato, a classical Greece philosopher, shared the same conception that all harmonious creations are interrelated and that beauty is governed by how number, proportion, harmony and music are put together in the universe. Centuries later, several designers and architects have explored the connections of the harmony from music and the harmony of architectural spaces. The Italian architect Palladio used musical ratios in generating the length and width of the spaces inside the renowned Italian Villas. Another Italian architect, Alberti, came up with areas which were based on musical consonances and considered these to be among the most harmonious spaces. This thesis aimed to explore the relationship of the music and architecture of the ethnic groups studied were the T?boli, B?laan, Meranao, Bagobo and Manobo. The first part of the research involved the analysis of the socio-cultural setting of the ethnic groups of Mindanao and the influence to their music and architecture. This analysis would give light to one connection of music, architecture, and the culture of people. The second part of the research involved analysis of the spatial dimensions of the existing architecture and its connection to harmonious interval ratios from music, which was based on the studies of thinkers and designers from the past regarding harmony of spaces inherent to the use of interval ratios as dimensions of spaces. The width/length ratios of the interior spaces of the architecture of each ethnic groups were compared and associated to the ratios found in their music, in order to explore the relationship of the harmony of the interior space and the harmony of music. Based on the research, the socio-cultural relationship of music and architecture are governed by the natural environment of the ethnic groups. Materials used in the architecture- which included sawali, bamboo laths and posts, rattan lashings and timber- are those which are immediately found in their environment. The inspirations for the melodic and rhythmic patterns of the ethnic music were also taken from the sounds heard around their environment such as bird calls and waves. Each ethnic music analyzed have short notes at fast tempo which creates the organic sounds. Regarding the proportional aspect, it was found that the dimensions of the existing ethnic architecture, even without the conscious knowledge of the people, are related to the interval ratios found in their music. The width-length ratios of the interior spaces are related to interval ratios found in their music. Reflecting these connections of music and architecture in an architectural project would help promote and preserve the rich culture of the ethnic groups of Mindanao. The use of musical proportions is also a way of reflecting the internal harmony of music in an iconic architecture. |
