520 3# - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Walking is an incidental physical activity, wherein a person's intention to walk is not for physical activity, but unconsciously he still does. Walkability is the perception of a space, place, or environment that allows people to move from one place to another comfortably or hassle free. A walkable community possess? the physical characteristics of a built environment such as sidewalks and proximity of destinations, influences the choice of the people to walk around. The purpose of the study was to find the limiting factors ? the existing physical characteristics in the built environment ? that influences a student's choice to walk to and from school. Secondary public school students who live within an 800m radius from the school were surveyed to determine how often they walk to and from school and to rate the walkability in the area. Three types of residential communities in Buhangin District, Davao City were examined. The results of the study show that even with the existing poor conditions of the built environment s, there are still some students who opt to walk to and from school. And regardless of the density of the community, to choice to walk is not as much limited by the physical characteristics of the environment. Students make use of what is available in their community, even though walking along the dirt road of the street is unsafe and inconvenient. Also, a lot of the students do not have an idea of the standard definition of a sidewalk. Even so, students are still dissatisfied of the existing conditions of their communities. The dissatisfaction coincides with the poor rating of the existing sidewalk and street conditions from the proponent's survey. Thus, the need to incorporate and inform of the students, as well as other residents of the community, of the proper built environment medium for walking was needed. Incorporation of adequate pedestrian infrastructure in the built environment was needed to allow safe and convenient walks and continue to influence walking in the community.
