Summary, etc. |
The Philippine has abundant coastal resources such as marine species and coral reefs. The country also boasts a rich fishing ground that encourage many settlers to stay near the shore and become dependent to coastal resources. For years, the communities around the coast expanded and practiced activities like overfishing, throwing plastics and garbage around the shore and other activities that depleted coastal resources. However, the government made initiatives and set policies for managing resources wherein community involvement is a vital factor to make the programs a success. This aims to assess the communities? willingness to participate in the restoration and management efforts, determine the factors that affect their decision, determine existing laws on coastal resource management and recommend strategies if there is any. To achieve this, the study used Logistic regression with underlying dependent and independent variables. This research also used stratified random sampling to identify coastal barangays in the municipality of Sta. Cruz. In general, majority of the coastal communities in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur are willing to participate in coastal restoration and management efforts. More specifically, those who are willing were the females, reside in the barangay for more than 15 years, comprise the age of 25 to more than 60 years old, those who are married, are elementary to college level and those who have past experienced in any natural disasters. Different factors that affect the respondents? willingness to participation are determined. It includes socio-demographic factors, perception on coastal resources and level of dependency on coastal resources. However, more respondents are willing to participate in coastal restoration than in coastal management efforts. Inventory on local policies were also presented in the study. The researcher recommends to strengthen policy implementation and to widen information dissemination. |
