Summary, etc. |
Coconut sugar has gained popularity in global markets due to the growing consciousness of consumers of its health attributes. The Philippines is one of the top producers of coconut sugar in the world, but its economic potential is still untapped to its full extent. Hence, this study sought to examine further the constraints and opportunities for coconut sugar value chain in General Santos City, identified the role of different actors in the chain and assessed the distribution of benefits among the actors along the chain. Value Chain Analysis and Net Margin Analysis was employed in order to identify leverage points on which upgrading strategies were recommended. The actors identified in the chain include tappers, suppliers, processors, and distributors. Processors govern the value chain as they exhibit market power. On the other hand, tappers and suppliers are price takers. Net margins analysis showed that distributors have the largest net margin per kilogram, followed by tappers, processors and suppliers. Although distributors have the highest margin/kg, processors have higher revenues due to the large volume of quantity produced. The most pressing issue faced by the stakeholders is the unstable demand for coconut sugar. Many buyers of Philippine Coconut sugar have shifted to other producers as they were able to set lower prices. In order to strengthen competitiveness, processors have started to cut down their costs and improve their production systems. They also explored new value-added products such as amino sauce, coco honey, and chocolates made with coconut sugar. The study recommends that processors and concerned government agencies must collaborate in improving the quality of coconut sugar through research and development of processing techniques and equipment. Small-scale coconut sugar producers could also strengthen their organizations in order to take advantage of marketing as a group so that they can process coconut sugar and directly market to profitable marketing channels. The role of concerned government agencies is important as well to offer quality support functions such markets information, technology, facilities and market linkages. |
