Analyzing the indigenous sports and tribal games from the different lumad tribes of Davao City and their influence to the design of a cultural sports complex / John Alexander O. Setarios

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: 2013Description: 249 leavesSubject(s): Dissertation note: Thesis (BS Architecture) -- University of the Philippines Mindanao, 2013 Abstract: A sport represents a society. Countries and communities are recognized by the games they play and how passionate they are about the game. Sports shape cultures, drive economies, and mold politics. It is important that national and ethnic games are favored by the new generation before they disappear along with the new technological advancement. Arenas by nature exhibit aspects of civic pride and civic identity simply through society's seeming obsession with sports, yet many fall short of becoming functional pieces of the urban fabric. In order to create a truly urban sports facility, it is imperative that the stadium not only create a symbol of civic pride and civic identity, but also become a functional component of the urban fabric through ethnic tribal identity and the development of supplementary programs. This is a descriptive research which aims to promote the rich culture of Davao City through its indigenous sports and tribal games. It aims to preserve the slowly fading culture of the lumad tribes of Davao City and bring it back to prominence. Indigenous games from each of the lumad tribes will be analyzed and performed to formulate the most effective playing space. Data will be gathered with the use of a Focus Group Discussion or FGD. All the gathered indigenous games will be integrated with the most popular mainstream sports in the City and analyze its influence to the design of cultural sports complex. The study would create an iconic design that will play a vital role in the urban fabric and represent the culture of a city and help preserve it.
