By: Contributor(s): Material type: TextTextLanguage: English Publication details: 2015Description: 336 leavesSubject(s): Dissertation note: Thesis (BS Architecture) -- University of the Philippines Mindanao, 2015 Abstract: The main purpose of the study is to help answer the problem of environmental degradation caused by established landfill sites. Eventually, as population increases, more wastes will be generated thus demanding for more parcel of lands to be converted into dumpsites. These area can be further used for other purposes like agricultural, residential, and perhaps commercial if not changed into large garbage bins. On this study, market wastes as primary contributor to dumpsites were utilized as the subject for conversion in order to come up with useful by-products. The identified garbage were papers, plastics, rotten vegetables and fruits, fish gills and bloods, and animal bones. Each identified waste have corresponding conversion processes like vermi composting, fish amino acid production, calcium phosphate production, and light shredded plastics as additives for road construction. Calcium Phosphate Ca-P (animal bone) is a type of liquid fertilizer which induces flowering and prevents overgrowth. For older plants, it increases calcium factor on roots and leaves. Ca-P is applied when the plants are about to flower. Fish Amino acid is a liquid fertilizer which contains abundant amount of nutrients and various types of amino acid. It gives nitrogen and can be mixed on the food of pigs and chickens. Vermi composting on the other hand is a type of organic fertilizer production which uses earthworm (African Night Crawler) for decomposing biodegradable waste. As the decayed wastes produces fungus which feed the earthworms, in return, they produce their own waste which is capsulated and mixed with the soil to act as conditioner. The subject wet and dry public markets namely Agdao, Bankerohan, and Toril will be integrated with waste conversion facility not only to promote cleanliness and to produce by-products, but also to provide livelihood to community. This study will paved the way to discover more conversion processes which will reduce the environmental hazards caused by landfill sites and perhaps another type of integration.
