This study explores the contents, tendencies, and strategies of parent-child interaction and parental mediation during television viewing, and explains these by describing the families? television viewing habits and power relations in the household. These were done through an in-depth interview of eight working middle-class mothers who have children aged two to seven years old, and who mediate their children's television viewing. Through the data obtained, it was found out that parent-child interaction during television viewing involves parental mediation- implementation of rules, and explanation of content that is usually through judgment and critique. Data also revealed that aside from the parents? perception on negative influences brought about by the television content (i.e. language, violence and aggression), other factors that affect parental mediation in children's television viewing also include the parents? perception on the negative effects on the children's health and schooling, their perception on certain television shows, and their own perceptions and expectations in their children's behavior anchored on their own gender stereotypes. Knowing the content of parent-child interaction and parental mediation is essential to parents and to children, especially with the dominance and prevalence of technological advancements.
