Karyotypic analysis of Cyathea Contaminans (Hook.) copel. found in Veruela, Agusan del Sur / Bryan L. del Rosario

By: Material type: TextTextLanguage: English Publication details: 2004Description: 33 leavesSubject(s): Dissertation note: Thesis (BS Biology) -- University of the Philippines Mindanao, 2004 Summary: Karyotypic analysis of Cyathea contaminans was done to determine its chromosome number. Fiddleheads were collected from 6:00AM to 4:00PM at one-hour intervals to determine the mitotic index. At 8:00AM, the mitotic index was highest at 35%. The different mitotic stages were found to be normal. To construct the karyogram, three fiddleheads were again collected at 8:00AM. Prophase cell measured had an average length of 12.60 m width. Six metaphase cells were karyotyped, which revealed the chromosome number to be 2n=18. The resulting average relative lengths of the nine chromosomes from the six cells have standard deviations ranging from 0.010 to 0.034. this suggests that the chromosomes from the six sample cells are similar in length. These results provide basis for the conclusion that from the C. contaminans sampled from Veruela the chromosome number is 2n=18. However, the result of this study differed greatly from previous studies. But such cases were found to occur, although rare, in certain plant species
