Thesis (BS Architecture) -- University of the Philippines Mindanao, 2011

This thesis is a descriptive analysis of the current state of Mintal and the view of its residents to the proclamation of the Barangay as a Japanese heritage site. The study was conducted through a survey which involved 120 respondents divided into four age brackets; namely High school students (aged 12-16), College students (age 17-21), Middle aged (age 30-50) and Elderly (aged 60 onwards). Each bracket has a number of 30 respondents. A site analysis and some library and internet research were also conducted. The results of the study are as follows; it was found out that the prevailing structure of the respondents' choice is the commercial complex and followed by the shrine. Next is the Business Inn and the last is the museum. The ranking shows that the prevailing site is the Mintal Public Market followed by the Mintal Elementary School and the Mintal Public Park. The researcher has come up with a design of the public market following a linear planning based on a traditional shrine plan and located in the current public market. The museum is located in the elementary school to guarantee educational support to students. The business inn is situated in the existing gymnasium area which is the business area of the pre-war Mintal. The shrine is designed also based in traditional Shinto shrine layout and situated in the existing Mintal Cemetery. Some auxiliary buildings were also added such as public toilet, terminal and shrine auxillary buildings.
