Through credit facilities, farmers will be able to purchase farm inputs such as high-yielding varieties of seeds, fertilizers, and other technologies necessary to increase their production. This study assessed the use of formal credit of the smallholder rice farmers in Nabunturan, Compostela Valley Province. Specifically, this study identified the socio-demographic characteristics and economic profile of the farmers and determined some of the constraints faced by the farmer in acquiring formal credit, and other sources of credit. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and were distributed among the 144 respondents. The data were analyzed with the use of descriptive statistics and logit model. Results showed that only 37% of the farmer-respondents used formal credit, while 63% do not use formal credit. Household size, land tenure status, income, savings, insurance, perception of credit, perception of credit procedures and access to formal credit information were the significant factors that affect the smallholder rice farmers access to formal credit. Informal sources served as a substitute credit sources of the rice farmers, given the constraints that farmers faced in borrowing money to formal credit institutions. Hence, the government and credit institutions should design innovative credit schemes and develop policy measures to improve farmers? use of formal credit, and effectively meet farmers? credit requirements
