Growth, reproduction and age determination of seagrass Cymodocea rotundata (Ehrenberg and Hemprich ex ascherson) population in Penaplata, Island Garden City of Samal / Anna Katherina A. Mansilla

By: Material type: TextTextLanguage: English Publication details: 2000Description: 26 leavesSubject(s): Dissertation note: Thesis (BS Biology) -- University of the Philippines Mindanao, 2000 Summary: Sampling for cymodocea rotundata was done in Penaplata, Island Garden City of Samal. Its growth and reproductive pattern were determined and its age structure reconstructed. The data collected showed no seasonality in terms of growth pattern. Such occurrence maybe attributed to several factors such as light and nutrients. The vertical growth observed ranges from 0.1 to 2.0 mm. Moreover, a direct proportionality was observed in the age of structure of seagrass in relation to the no. of nodes per shoot and the shoot height. This depicts a linear growth pattern. In addition, the data from the reproductive pattern suggests very low flowering frequency. The shoot age distribution also suggests that the seagrass starts to flower at the age of 4.94 months. It was concluded that the C. rotundata population in Penaplata are of young age since only 9% of the total shoots observed produced flower
