520 3 _aThe country's emerging concern on indiscriminate waste disposal has posed as a major threat to health, sanitation, and environmental security. This paved the way of legislating the Republic Act 9003 and the Davao City Ordinance No. 0361-10. This laws aims to adopt an ecological, systematic, and comprehensive solid waste management (SWM) program (RA9003, 2000). This study then is an effort to create an educational material that will help schools in complying one of the provisions in these laws: the integration of topics regarding proper solid waste management in the academic curricula of primary students. This specific provision has been chosen because childhood is the foundation of relationships with the environment. (Wilson, 2011). This sets of children aged 7-9myears old as the target audience of this production study. This audience however, will not be able to readily comprehend the concepts behind the laws RA 9003 and the Davao City Ordinance No. 0361-10, because they have learning needs that are to be considered first. Such needs are (a) the tangible presence of the objects necessary for problem solution, (b) direct experience of the context or situation of the concept and (c) active learning. These learning need have then become the basis for appropriately designing the educational material to be visual, narrative, and interactive; hence creating an Interactive Visual Narrative. This Interactive Visual Narrative has been created through the exploration of the use of combining techniques such as tradigital imaging, shadow manipulation, and sound to communicate a message. Its conceptual design in incorporating all these techniques is based on the study, The Intrinsic Motivations for Learning which discusses the facets that make educational computer games fun and effective. With this, the production study is able appropriately design the educational material, and is thus able to deliver the message regarding Solid Waste Management to children.
